What is Roots & Shoots?
“Roots and Shoots” – that’s the translation of the name of this global youth program founded by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1991. Shoots may seem delicate, but they can break through walls. That’s exactly what the children and young people in this network do every day.
Roots & Shoots is a community action program initiated by Dr. Jane Goodall for children and young people who want to make a difference themselves. The program motivates young people worldwide to get involved for people, animals, and the environment. In their groups, they develop their own projects and implement them with support from the Jane Goodall Institute. Today, the network connects more than 10,000 children and young people in around 75 countries who want to actively shape the future.

What do the groups do specifically?
Building birdhouses, setting up insect hotels, planting bee meadows, cultivating school gardens, sorting trash, cleaning water bodies – the projects are as diverse as the children themselves. It only takes two people to start a group. Anyone interested can find all the information on the Roots & Shoots project page.
